Beautiful portraits aren’t just for women
No matter what you might’ve heard
There seems to be this unspoken bias when it comes to photoshoots; that somehow, it’s something for women and women only. Well, whatever you might’ve heard guys, beautiful portraits aren’t just for women. They’re for you too, and we’re here to explain why.
While it’s true that most people who book a photoshoot with us are women, plenty of men are having their portraits taken with us every week! Whether on your own, with your partners, your families or pets, we’ve captured more of you lovely men last year than ever before, and frankly – we couldn’t be happier! Especially when, historically, guys have ended up at our studio only because they’ve being dragged along or bribed by their spouses, their kids, their siblings (and most effective) their mums…
Whatever way you’ve found yourself at our studio in the past, we’ve noticed that, ultimately, you get as much out of having a photoshoot experience as the girls. Men deserve to exist in portraits, commemorate themselves, their loved ones and improve their self-confidence just as much as women do, don’t they? According to a 2020 survey by Dr. Jake Linardon, 15% men report an “overvaluation of weight and shape”, and this is a number that many fear is highly underestimated.
So basically, you guys are feeling the pressure to look a certain way and conform to an idealised version of masculinity that, let’s face it, only 0.01% can actually fit into…
So that’s the solution? Gregory Brown, founder and director of the Green Psychiatry Centre, is an advocate for making wellness and self-care more accessible to men, and was quoted in a 2019 interview with Mashable Australia as saying:
“A lot of men, when they think of self-care, quite frankly imagine a woman in a bubble bath with a glass of champagne -and that’s just not manly…they think that if they’re taking time for self-care, they’re losing productivity/ time from. And that goes against what society tells us is masculine”
Having a professional photoshoot, along with all other types of self-care, self-exploration, and confidence building and just generally working on being our #bestselves, living our #bestlife, has for the longest time, been a female dominated space, however society is seeing a shift, and so is the studio.
To prove it, here are what some of the guys have had to say about their experiences…
“I came in with my girlfriend and we ended up having individual portraits taken as part of the shoot which I wasn’t that keen for, but then when we were looking at the photos afterwards I actually really liked them, and my girlfriend was stoked to have a photo of me she could keep in her wallet too.” – James
“I’ve never been that into having my photo taken, but I think it’s just ‘cause I was self-conscious and had always felt really awkward in front of the camera…I would definitely say it’s boosted my confidence actually!” – Stephen
“My mum must’ve nagged me for about 3 years to come and have some photos done, and in hindsight I feel a bit of an arse not doing it – it was actually really fun in the end… the photographer we had just made everything quick and easy and I thought I looked pretty good in the end”
Whether it’s just casual wear, formal wear, family, corporate style or dude-oir (lingerie for dudes!), having a photoshoot is an amazing thing to do for yourself. The sessions are genuinely fun and creative and the outcome is that you get to feel great about yourself, and have professional portraits to look back on in 10 – 20 years time when gravity’s taken it’s toll on your physique, and your genes on your hairline…
